Silver Lake Sand Dunes Engagement Session
When Meg & Rainer were trying to decide on the best location for their adventure engagement session they tossed around multiple ideas, including the Redwoods in California and the Arizona desert, but Meg told us that her heart kept coming back to the sand dunes in Michigan. It’s a special place for them; they didn’t feel like any other place would feel as much like who they are.
They’re getting married at a castle in Charlevoix, Michigan later this year, and so it was quite fitting that we kept to the theme of their day by remaining in the Great Lakes state for their engagement pictures.
There are so many unique coastal dunes in the Michigan, but we decided on the Silver Lake Dunes near Grand Rapids/Muskegon since they’re the most expansive.
They both dressed formally, but decided to leave their shoes in their car and go barefoot; and Meg carried a custom bouquet of fresh flowers created by Eastlyn.
It was a cloudless, but windy evening, which is what we were hoping for as that combo creates the most dramatic portraiture.
At the end of this set you’ll also notice several headlights in the distance—these are dune buggies, trucks, and jeeps that use this specific park for off-road recreation. We loved how the lights created a star-like skyline backdrop as the sky faded into the blue hour.

We’re drawn back here nearly every year, and have enjoyed seeing its wonder in every season. The landscape is constantly changing, and the light reflects a little differently on these dunes everyday. Therefore, it’s nearly impossible to recreate the same photo twice. That’s why we love bringing couples here. There is always an original and fresh perspective to create for our clients, yet its timelessness and beauty will not fade.
